While useful as a stand-alone item, the MEST™ can also compliment one of our tarps or an existing shelter system you currently have. The silnylon MEST™ can be used as an emergency shelter, improvised pack cover, improvised litter, etc.
silicone coated 1.1 oz ripstop nylon (silnylon). This fabric is coated with silicon layer on each side and is non-breathable. Lightweight and durable with some of the best waterproof/windproof performance on the market.

Many people choose not to seam seal their tarps but for the maximum level of waterproofing we recommend any tarp be treated along the center seam. The recommended sealer for this tarp is our silnylon sealant found on the line/shelter accessories page. You simply apply a small amount of sealant to a gloved finger and spread a thin even coat along the center seam being sure to cover all of the exposed threads/folds in the fabric and let stand overnight to dry. This works best when you seal the outside layer of the tarp and should be done with the seam under mild tension such as when the tarp is in an A-frame configuration.

Lightweight tarp high quality small pack size

Awesome piece of kit!
This is a high-quality, cottage-industry tarp perfect for bare-bones survival shelter. The tie-outs appear to be 0.75 inch nylon grosgrain ribbon webbing, and are bar-tacked to the perimeter. I own the less expensive urethane-coated version in Coyote Brown as well and love it. If you’re on the fence as to which version to get, just buy either one, you honestly can’t go wrong. The silnylon version is 6 ounces, and the urethane version is 9 ounces. The stuff sack is oversized to accommodate a bad fold job as well as cordage and stakes, making this a spartan grab-and-go shelter solution. Frankly the weight savings were worth the extra coin to me. This tarp will form the basis of a minimalist shelter module in an urban survival pack. I will pair it with titanium skewer stakes and a 750 paracord ridge line. In summation, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase, I would happily recommend this Bushcraft Outfitters product to anyone looking for a durable, waterproof, small tarp in a subdued color. I’d give it 10 stars if I could; BCO is great company and a pleasure to do business with.

Silnylon Mest
I have an 8x10 version of this and liked it so much I ordered the smaller 5 x 8 version. Super versatile. Spend the extra and get the silicone-coated version; it's worth it. Much better water repellency.

Perfect lightweight shelter
I'm very happy with the MEST tarp. 5'x8' and 6 oz. is the perfect size and weight to throw in my day pack and have ready for any conditions. It's big enough to offer short-term coverage from rain, sun, or wind. There are enough tie-outs for many useful configurations. It would also be usable for camping in mild conditions; it would pair well with my Borah Gear bivy. Very pleased to add this to my kit.
